ARTS on the PARK, Inc.

A Short History

Arts on the Park was founded in 1979 by members of the Lakeland Art Guild. Motivated by the desire and need for exhibition space of Guild members. Dudley Uphoff and Lamar Blanton began offering monthly theme shows for the guild members in rented space on Main Street. Block parties held at the same time eventually became a part of the outdoor festivities of Munn Park. These included concerts, art shoes and festivals.

In 1985 Arts on the Park acquired space in historic Raymondo Building on the East side of Munn Park. The building dates from 1905 and is the only one still remaining intact of the original Raymondo block.  Its history and uniqueness make it one of the most interesting structures bordering Munn Park. Renovations at the time of acquisition included repairing the plaster walls, adding an interior spiral staircase, a skylight and an external staircase. The attractive space stimulated community interest and support and attracted many new members.

A 1989 muli-dicsipline expo entitled “Fantastic Realism” focused on social issues, the homeless, the despair and abandonment of the Lakeland Downtown area. This cultural festival featured a theatrical performance written and produced by a group known as the “Termites”.  Another highlight was the original music composed especially for the festival. The success and community interest stimulated by this activity pinpointed the need to focus ore attention on the social, economic and cultural development of the heart of Lakeland, This awakening was influential ion the establishment of Lakeland’s Redevelopment Planning Commission.

Recent years has witnessed major growth in the diversity and number of festivals, exhibits, art shows and performances. Among them have been The Fall Festival, Snow Fest, Florida Folk Music Festival, Native American Festival, Black Women’s Caucus, Young Artist’s Competition and the Senior Showcase. Arts on the Park has also founded publications for writers and poets.

The death of Dudley Uphoff in 1995 was a great loss. Under his direction Arts on the Park had become a thriving venue for local artists, writers, musicians and performing artists. His contacts throughout the community with artists, and art lovers and supporters were vital links. With much devotion and commitment from loyal board members and lots of volunteer help Arts on the Park continues to plan, develop and present a wide variety of artistic events providing Lakeland with a continuing exposure to the world of art and artists.
